THE DESIGN OF MYTH

Robin Davis’s painterly, illustrative images are as rich with the nuance of timeless story as they are with the color, lighting and expressions that tell it.  From iconographic portraits to landscapes that simmer with a consciousness all their own, Robin illustrates her unusual perception for finding the thread of fantasy within reality. Her dedication to painstaking technical processes renders photographs that resemble paintings, yet all her work is done in camera with no dependence on post-processing effects.

Robin’s inspiration comes from “subliminally inspired fragments,” sparked by a variety of real-life encounters — from an antique shoe found at a flea market, to a piece of landscape framed to exclude modernity, or even an expression on a stranger’s face in a restaurant.  Such varied scenes trigger an unfolding story within Robin’s mind which she then develops into the final photograph often using found objects as props and models who might be her friends or people she’s met by accident – or would that be fate?   “I am drawn again and again to the power of feminine characters and their symbolism in different time periods,” Robin explains about her most recent “13 Women” series. These, and Robin’s other representations of character archetypes, let us know that the timeless struggle and triumphs of myth still live within us and connect us all.

Mason Murer’s Spring 2013 Show includes Robert Marx drawings, paintings by Jeanie Tomanek, Karen Hollingsworth, Craig Hawkins, and Will Rafuse, Paintings from new artists: animal portraiture by Ray Hare and urban landscapes by Valerio D’Ospina. Sculptures from Steve Steinman and Todd Fuller. Finally, two groups from academia round out our exhibition: the Georgia High School Art Symposium and Damn Fine: a SCAD MFA Group Show.
